Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect in the case of raping and murdering a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has once again declared his innocence. When he spoke before the court for the first time, Roy said, “I am innocent and I know nothing about this case.”
This comes a day after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) charged Roy, who was working with the Kolkata Police as a contract worker, for raping and killing a trainee doctor. The incident happened while the victim was resting in the teaching room of the hospital during a break on August 9.
33-year-old Roy initially pleaded guilty after being arrested on August 10. However, he made a U-turn during a polygraph test, claiming he was framed and innocent.
The CBI, in its charge sheet, said that Roy committed the crime alone and ruled out the possibility of gang-rape. The CBI has presented a total of 11 pieces of evidence against Roy to prove his direct involvement in the killing of the trainee doctor.
In a charge sheet filed before a special court in Kolkata, the CBI said several facts, circumstances, oral and documentary evidence and intelligence/scientific reports, prove that the crime was committed by Roy inside the lecture hall of the medical institute.
The CBI said Roy’s presence at the hospital on the night of August 8 and 9, was proved by the location of his mobile phone as per the CDR (call detail record). A short hair was found at the crime scene matching that of accused Sanjay Roy during the examination by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL).
The CBI cited the pairing of one Bluetooth earphone found at the crime scene with Roy’s seized mobile phone as another piece of evidence against him. Further, the injuries found on her body are unexplained injuries with marks of resistance/struggle by the victim, the CBI said.
The agency investigating the case had said that the crime scene had changed when it took up the case, talking about Roy’s meeting with a few police officers in Kolkata.
The Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered that the investigation be transferred from the Kolkata police to the CBI.
