AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal has expressed high confidence that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will win the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat-vacated by Rahul Gandhi-with a record.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday (September 25, 2024) following the review meeting of the United Democratic Front (UDF), Mr. Venugopal emphasized the party’s commitment to securing an important victory for Ms. Vadra in the upcoming bye-elections.
During his speech, he noted that previous discussions with former leaders led to a unanimous decision to join grassroots campaigns to strengthen support for Ms. Vadra.
Mr. Venugopal also spoke about the pressing challenges caused by the devastating landslides that hit Wayanad on July 30, citing them as a major obstacle to the election preparations. He criticized the central government for not responding properly to the crisis, saying that a temporary aid package should have been announced instead of waiting for the official plans of the State.
He urged the State government to investigate the reasons behind this delay and review its proposals as necessary to ensure that aid reaches those who need it.
Despite these challenges, Mr. Venugopal affirmed the UDF’s determination to hold both the Central and state governments accountable, stressing that the Wayanad debacle represents one of the nation’s worst tragedies. He lamented that many of the survivors had not yet received the necessary relief, saying that this delay was due to problems that are suspected to be working together within the State Government.
