Members of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti observed Black Day on the day of Karnataka Rajyotsava in Belagavi on Friday.
Activists gathered in Wadagaon-Shahapur premises in the morning. They shouted slogans agreeing to join Maharashtra. They also raised slogans and carried placards against the Federal Government. The district administration, which had earlier refused permission for the Black Day observation, later allowed the meeting and the protest.
The slogans raised include: “Let there be a united Maharashtra with Belagavi, Karwar, Khanapur, Nippani, Bhalki, Bidar and other Marathi speaking areas”. A bike and bicycle rally, and a Padayatra were held on the streets of the old city later.

Sri Ram Sene leader Ramakant Konduskar, MES leaders like Manohar Kinekar, Maloji Ashtekar, Shubham Shelke, Deepak Dalvi and others addressed the protesters. Mr. Shelke said that they were saddened by the Federal Government that failed to do another phase of language counting and delimitation of States based on language criteria. He also accused the State government of following Kannada placement policies, and neglecting Marathi schools on the border.
The city police had strict security arrangements. A team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Satya Nayak and others were present during the meeting as well.
