The Chief Secretary of West Bengal, Manoj Pant, sent an email to the protesting junior doctors detailing the government’s status report on health care initiatives aimed at improving safety and security in medical colleges across the country.
The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in West Bengal is making major improvements in medical colleges and hospitals across the state, according to a status report.
As part of the comprehensive plan, the government is installing a total of 7,051 CCTVs, building 893 new operating rooms, and building 778 bathrooms in various medical facilities.
In an effort to ensure the successful completion of these projects, the state government has allocated over Rs 113 crore for the development of medical colleges.
Additionally, proper lighting systems, alarm systems and biometric access control are also implemented in all medical colleges and hospitals nationwide.
Most of these projects are progressing well, and more than 90% are nearing completion. The only exception is RG Kar Medical College, where a No Objection Certificate (NOC) was received from the investigating authorities just two days ago. The government expects all ongoing projects to be completed by October 15, 2024.
To further improve healthcare services, the West Bengal government has established a Stakeholder Committee in all medical colleges and hospitals.
This committee will include heads of departments, senior and junior doctors, and nursing staff, ensuring the full involvement of all health care stakeholders.
Additionally, a government grievance redressal committee has been established to address any concerns or complaints from the healthcare community. Participants can report issues via email to this committee.

A Central Complaint Helpline has been set up to handle various complaints from various health facilities, available on the toll-free number 1800-257-0511, the report said.
The state government has constituted a Security Review Committee of all Medical Colleges under the chairmanship of Shri Surajit Kar Purkayastha, IPS (Ret.), former Director General of Police, West Bengal, to examine various security protocols and electronic surveillance systems.
Other measures include a security review committee for all medical colleges and provision of 1,113 dedicated women constables to ensure security in medical institutions.
