Sikandar Malik, an independent candidate from Bandipore constituency, is present is supported by the banned organization Jamaat-e-Islamiis campaigning for the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir with a special GPS tracking anklet on his feet.
Notably, Jamaat cannot legally participate in elections due to a ban under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) imposed by the Ministry of Interior in 2019 for alleged anti-national activities and terrorist links. The ban was extended for another five years earlier this year.
Malik, who was arrested in connection with the UAPA case against Jamaat by the National Investigation Agency, is currently out on bail and has been wearing a GPS tracker since the last four months.
Speaking exclusively to India Today TV, Malik said that he wants votes for the development of Bandipore, including proper educational institutions in the district. He said that if he is voted into power, he will ensure that Bandipore develops completely.
When asked about the allegations that Jamaat-e-Islami was deliberately allowed by the BJP to field candidates to dilute the votes of other parties, he said it was just rumors of regional parties. Notably, Malik was a former leader of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Speaking about the GPS tracker on Malik’s feet, he called it a “violation of human rights” and said he would challenge it in court.
“I have been told to wear this tracker until the investigation of the UAPA case against Jamaat-e-Islami,” he said.
He further said that they will approach the Supreme Court to remove the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami under the UAPA.
Jamaat-e-Islami has been accused of supporting separatism in Kashmir, including supporting armed protests and violence. After the controversial 1988 Assembly elections, the organization was merged with separatist organizations.
After the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the government attacked the Jamaat under the UAPA, arresting leaders and confiscating property.
In the past year, the organization has shown a change in attitude, from boycotting elections to supporting independent people.
The three phases of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections are over and the final phase of voting will take place on October 1. The results will be announced on October 8.
