Ryan Williams caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Milroe with 2:18 left and No. 4 Alabama beat No. Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer.
Then, another Alabama freshman wearing the No. 2 jersey, defensive end Zabien Brown, intercepted a Carson Beck pass in the end zone to secure the win.
The 17-year-old Williams turned and latched onto the ball, made a quick pivot and ran down the right sideline. Milroe then hit Germie Bernard on the two-run conversion for the Tide (4-0, 1-0).
The long TD pass came one play and 13 seconds after Carson Beck’s 67-yard bomb to Dillon Bell gave the Bulldogs (3-1, 1-1) their first lead of the game.
It was DeBoer’s introduction to a fascinating rivalry for SEC power that added another memorable chapter, without Nick Saban looking on the sidelines.
A rematch of last season’s SEC Championship game, also won by Alabama, turned into an interesting quarterback duel.
Milroe completed 27 of 33 passes for 374 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also ran for 117 yards and two TDs. Williams had six catches for 177 yards.
Beck was 27 of 50 passing for 439 yards with three touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions in the first multi-interception game of his career but scored in the second half.
The Bulldogs scored three touchdowns in the final 9:46. Alabama got the only one it needed.
Milroe led Alabama to touchdowns on its first four drives against a defense that ranked as the only FBS to not allow a punt.
With the Bulldogs down 28-0 in a matter of minutes in the second quarter, their 42-game regular season streak and 28-game SEC regular season streak appeared to be over at halftime.
Beki then brought them back.
The takeaway
Georgia: Looked vulnerable with a program that has won two of its last three national titles in the past two games, including a 13-12 victory over Kentucky. But the Bulldogs showed they weren’t going anywhere with a dominant second half.
Alabama: The Tide so far have shown no signs of slipping under DeBoer, especially offensively, rolling on the road against Wisconsin and surviving at home against their latest SEC foe.
Survey results
Alabama will jump at least one spot in the AP poll. The Bulldogs’ performance in the second half probably means they won’t go far.
Next
Alabama: At Vanderbilt on Saturday in its SEC opener.
Georgia: The Athletics host longtime rival Auburn on Saturday.
It is reported by the Associated Press.
