Libya’s police chief has been arrested after the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for war crimes, media reports said.
Osama Najim, who directs the detention center in Tripoli in Mitiga, was reportedly arrested on Sunday in the Italian city of Turin.
Those who have been detained in different institutions have described torture, such as torture and rape. In 2022, the UN said it had found evidence of “grave rights violations”.
Mr Najim was arrested at the hotel following a tip from the international police agency Interpol, Italian newspaper Repubblica reported.
Italian migrant rescue organization Mediterranea Saving Humans said the arrests came after a “difficult” ICC investigation involving “years of complaints and victim testimony”.
An ICC spokesman did not immediately respond to the BBC’s queries.
Mediterranea Saving Humans also criticized the long-standing, controversial agreement between Italy, where Italy trains and funds coast guards to intercept migrant boats.
As part of this agreement, Libya is expected to help reduce the number of immigrants passing through the country to Italy.
When Mr. Najim was arrested, he was with other Libyan citizens and was planning to go to the stadium, Attorney General Lucia Musti told Repubblica.
Mr Najim’s case has reportedly been referred to the justice minister and the appeals court in Rome.
