From 10 January 2025, Indian D visa applicants will have to schedule individual fingerprinting appointments at Italian embassies.
D-type visas are suitable for long-term stays. A study visa also falls under the ‘Type D’ visa category. This visa option is for applicants who wish to study or conduct research in Italy for more than 90 days – this includes both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
According to government data, a total of 6,017 Indian students were in Italy in 2024 on study visas and 5,196 in 2023. In 2019, there were 4791 Indian students in Italy, 3211 in 2020 and 3008 in 2021.
This comes a year after the Italian government announced that Indian students hoping to stay in Italy after completing their degrees will now be allowed to stay in the country for another 12 months. According to the agreement, Indian students who wish to gather initial work experience, after completing academic/vocational training in Italy may be granted temporary residency in Italy for up to 12 months. Previously, those with a masters or PhD degree were eligible to return to Italy after their studies for 12 months.
The Italian government has also reserved a quota of 5000, 6000 and 7000 non-seasonal Indian workers for 2023, 2024 and 2025 under the current Flows Decree (the quota stands at 12000 for non-seasonal workers). Additionally, the Italian side has maintained a quota of 3000, 4000 and 5000 Indian seasonal workers for the years 2023, 2024 and 2025 under the current Flows Decree (the total number set at 8000 for seasonal workers).
