It’s hard to believe that a DC Comics parody can even exist in today’s superhero-dominated movie landscape. But alas, The People’s Joker it is somewhat of a miracle. One of Mashable’s top movies of 2024, the long-awaited, low-budget, slash trans coming-of-age villain story is now available to stream online.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker at home.
What The People’s Joker about?
In the DIY, campy setting of Batman’s Gotham City, Joker the Harlequin (Drew) hopes to make it to the comic strip, ruled by the corrupt cartoon version Saturday Night LiveLorne Michaels of the United Clown Bureau (UCB). Challenging UCB’s strict gender norms and challenging his own gender identity, Joker forms a new anti-comedy group alongside a friend and ends up fighting a treacherous crusade that controls the city. The story is laced with Batman references throughout, but ultimately uses a comic theme to convey Drew’s own real-life story. It’s both a coming-of-age story inspired by human life and superhero games wrapped up in “one fascinating artifact of modern media,” as Mashable reviewer Siddhant Adlakha put it.
Is it The People’s Joker is it worth watching?
“With his scathing humor and poignant emotional revelations, Drew has crafted a supervillain tale that’s as compelling as it is, as strange as it is profound,” writes Mashable Film Editor Kristy Puchko. We break down the top 20 in our list of the best movies of 2024, The People’s Joker you certainly touched us. It’s almost intentionally a cult film and not for everyone, but its 95 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes shows that its roots are a force to be reckoned with.
For those looking for a superhero movie that isn’t just another cog in the MCU or DC machine, The People’s Joker it’s definitely worth the watch. “There’s a deep love for all things DC, but without the overwhelming reverence that has caused so much fatigue,” adds Puchko.
