The Indian Air Force (IAF) is facing a serious pilot shortage, and recent reports by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defense highlight the seriousness of the issue.
The CAG report noted that the pilot shortage has increased from 486 in February 2015 to 596 in 2021, underscoring the growing challenge of maintaining operational readiness.
Despite plans to induct 222 trainee pilots annually between 2016 and 2021, the Air Force has failed to meet its targets. The report says this is due to several factors, including delays in resolving operational issues with training aircraft such as the Pilatus PC-7 Mk-II.
The Parliamentary Committee also raised concerns about the existing 1.25:1 pilot-to-seat ratio for fighter jets, warning that while adequate for peacetime, it may not be sufficient for high-powered operations.
Adding to the problem is the Air Force’s dwindling strength, as there are only 31 active military groups, well below the authorized strength of 42. Delays in acquiring new aircraft and phasing out aging aircraft have exacerbated the issue.
In response to this problem, the Air Force has taken steps to strengthen recruitment and retention efforts. It has revised its recruitment process through Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) and Air Force Selection Board (AFSB).
The ministry also launched targeted digital campaigns under its “DISHA” program to attract young talent.
“Efforts are underway to resolve operational issues with trainer aircraft and expand the training infrastructure to meet growing needs. The Air Force is exploring ways to improve retention, including better career advancement opportunities and incentives for experienced personnel,” sources said.
The Parliamentary report also highlighted the increased representation of women in the Air Force, noting that women now make up 14% of police officers, many of whom serve in combat roles. The introduction of women under the Agniveer Vayu scheme is expected to significantly improve the workforce.
