India-Canada diplomatic row: India summons envoy from Canada, downgrades ties with Ottawa

India on Monday withdrew its High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, along with other senior politicians and officials amid heightened tension between the two countries.

The government’s move came after Canada named the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats as ‘persons of interest’ in the investigation into the killing of Khalistani Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

In a statement announcing the withdrawal of the High Commissioner of India to Canada, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that in a violent and violent environment, the actions of the Trudeau Government jeopardized the security of diplomats.

“We do not believe in the current Canadian government’s commitment to ensuring their security. Therefore, the Government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other diplomats and targeted officials”, the statement said.

Earlier, the Canadian Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi was called by the Ministry of External Affairs. He was told that the baseless targeting of the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats and officials in Canada was totally unacceptable.

It was also pointed out that India reserves the right to take further steps in response to the Trudeau Government’s support for extremism, violence and separatism among the people of India, the MEA statement said.
