Hunter Sallis scored a bunch on his way to 30 points as Wake Forest defeated visiting Stanford with an 80-67 victory Wednesday night in Atlantic Coast Conference action in Winston-Salem, NC.
Tre’von Spillers had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Demon Deacons (13-4, 5-1 ACC) won their fourth straight game.
Sallis, who made three 3-pointers, shot 12 of 17 from the field and Spillers was 8 of 10. Sallis, who at one point in the second half had a 10-point streak at Wake Forest, surpassed 20 points for the sixth straight game.
Cameron Hildreth, who shot 10 for 10 on free throws, finished with 12 points.
Oziyah Sellers led Stanford (11-6, 3-3) with 16 points, while ACC scoring and rebounding leader Maxime Raynaud contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Raynaud was held nearly seven points below his season scoring average, going 6-for-11 from the 3-point field. However, it produced his 14th double-double in the nation.
Stanford’s Jaylen Blakes added 15 points and Ryan Agarwal had 14, but the Cardinals made just 8 of 24 attempts from 3-point range.
Wake Forest won despite shooting 3-for-11 on 3-pointers.
Stanford, on a two-game winning streak, suffered 13 turnovers compared to just six for the Demon Deacons.
Stanford was within 64-63 with less than five minutes remaining. Then at 68-65, Sallis drained a 3-point shot and, on the next possession, converted a three-point play to give the Demon Deacons a 74-65 lead.
While Sallis and Spillers had strong shooting nights, Hildreth went 1-for-12 from the field after scoring 31 points on Saturday in Miami. As a team, the Demon Deacons shot 50 percent from the field and collected nine offensive rebounds.
Stanford led 13-4 in the first three minutes of the game, but the Cardinal’s lead was 35-33 at halftime. Wake Forest’s 17-26 shooting from the field in the second half changed the complexion of the game.
