In the past 24 hours, I’ve watched in disbelief as friends in LA have shared photos of burning properties, emergency exits, and sadly, many of their homes burning to the ground. This disaster feels like nothing we’ve ever seen before—in just a few hours, thousands of people’s lives have been changed as they watch everything that belongs to them completely destroyed. Homes, schools, supermarkets, all neighborhoods were destroyed, leaving families homeless and communities in ruins.
As evacuation orders were announced, tens of thousands of people fled their homes for safety. Many walked with their belongings and pets as the roads were too congested to walk. The Los Angeles County fire marshal said there were not enough resources to fight the blaze. According to the king, the 29 departments “were not ready for this kind of widespread disaster.”
Thanks to everyone who found us—the fires are still a few miles south of our house in Malibu, but the winds are still strong and I still don’t feel like I’m completely in the woods. But that anxiety pales in comparison to the powerlessness I feel as I watch the devastation from afar—a feeling many of you have. Things we can do to help right now are praying for safety, visiting loved ones affected, and donating however we can financially.
In many disaster situations, monetary donations are very helpful because organizations can purchase and distribute needed items. If you choose to give physical items, check the official list first to make sure they are really needed. I have delved deeply into many different organizations that have been recruited to help first responders and those who have lost their homes, and I want to share the list here to make it as easy as possible to give.
Please send me others as you know them. And if you can, please consider donating to one of the organizations below:
Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation
There is a critical shortage of equipment for LA firefighters, and this base provides the critical equipment the LAFD needs to fight fires and save lives.
American Red Cross Los Angeles Region
The Red Cross has opened emergency centers around the city for evacuation. They need monetary donations to provide food, health services, clothing, and shelter to those who have been displaced.
Baby2Baby
Baby2Baby provides essential items including diapers, food, formula and hygiene products for children and families who have lost their homes.
Central Kitchen of the World
WCK is on the ground providing immediate food and water needs to first responders and families forced to evacuate.
Canine Rescue Club
Providing displaced dogs with temporary housing, safe transportation, medical care, and food. You can donate cash or register to foster a dog in need.
Direct Help
Direct Relief provides emergency medical supplies and services to communities affected by the fires. They work closely with local health centers and first responders.
The Strebe family
Our former deputy editor and dear friend Sacha lost their home in Altadena. He and his family poured their hearts and souls into renovating this home but lost it. You can donate directly to help them rebuild here.
