Deep Space Nine it had to break this core theme to give us some of Trek’s best episodes, and the writers and producers knew full well that Gene Roddenberry wouldn’t approve of what they were doing.
After the creator’s death in 1991, Rick Berman sat with his head over his desk and closed his eyes whenever the writers discussed a topic the franchise creator wouldn’t like. Presumably, that spotlight remained blindsided throughout the bloody Dominion War arc, but this arc is how the show achieved true greatness.
It’s not the focus on the war itself that does Deep Space Nine The best Trek show…instead, is the show’s consistent determination to tell us stories that are very different from what we’ve gotten before. As good as TNG was, the expectation bar was relatively low…the writers and producers just needed to give us more of what they did The Original Series very good. DS9 was the first season to try a few new things, including the recurring religious themes in each season.
