Homeless numbers are rising in Germany but the government is allaying fears

The number of people registered as homeless in Germany rose sharply to 532,000 last year, a government report said on Wednesday.

By 2022, the number was estimated at 263,000. But the roughly 137,000 Ukrainians who have come to Germany since the Russian invasion make up the number of people left homeless as they remain in temporary housing.

The government report said the numbers could also be misleading because many centers and homeless shelters were closed in 2022 due to coronavirus restrictions.

Until now, most of those who were counted as homeless last year were living in government-owned houses or with relatives and friends.
A number of homeless people live on the streets and of these, most of them are German citizens.
