While the virus can affect anyone, it poses a greater risk to young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems, the CDC notes.
Research suggests that HMPV has been circulating for at least six decades and is now recognized as a widespread respiratory virus that is increasing worldwide.

Two cases of HMPV have been detected in India as two children – an eight-month-old and a three-month-old – were found to be infected with the virus, officials said on Monday. Both had no travel history.
