Season 3, episode 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina a major Critical Role crossover event. Not only does the game continue the adaptation of the original Critical Role live-action campaign, it also includes an important character from Exandria Unlimited: Disastera small four-part campaign set up centuries earlier The Legend of Vox Machina and is run by Brennan Lee Mulligan.
‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Season 3 Review: Critical Role The series keeps upping the ante
The character in question is paladin Zerxus Ilerez (voiced by Luis Carazo, who also played Zerxus in A disaster). He is the current owner of the Plate of the Dawnmartyr, one of the Vestiges of Divergence that Vox Machina needs to defeat the dragon Thordak (voiced by the late Lance Reddick). Their quest brings them to Zerxus’ home in the Hells of Despath, where he and the priest Pike Trickfoot (portrayed by Ashley Johnson) are playing a high stakes card game of Plate. The sequel adapts elements from the original campaign, which saw the villain Scanlan (portrayed by Sam Riegel) gamble the Plate with a flamethrower on the Elemental Plane of Fire.
“From a story point of view, we had the opportunity to combine two songs for our campaign,” Travis Willingham, who voices Grog Strongjaw, told Mashable. (Willingham is also an executive producer on The Legend of Vox Machina and CEO of Critical Role.) The series could replace Vox Machina on the Fire Plane, which doesn’t have a very big story at this point in the show’s timeline, and include the idea that Ank’Harel’s ruler J’mon U Sa Ord ( voiced by Mara Junot) would hide the Plate in the Hells to keep it as far away from Thordak as possible.
“And right after I finished EXU: Disasteras Xerxus’ fate is sent to Hell, it turns out that maybe 800 years later, he’s still there, and that would be a good focus for the story,” continued Willingham. “Especially some of the expressions revealed in EXU: Disasterand how the Crisis started, and why that might be important to the main antagonists in a story that we might try to use in a big way if we get future seasons.”
Critical Role Actors Pick Their Top Teams for ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’
The appearance of Xerxus is not a short Easter egg. Instead, he plays a sweet role in the episode, with a show that goes hand in hand with his complicated relationship with his deity – in A disasterthat is Asmodeus, Lord of the Nine Hells, though he is not mentioned by name here – due to Pike’s doubt in his faith in the Everlight. At their meeting, he also gives Vox Machina a quick list of events A disasteraccompanied by stained glass style animation reminiscent of the campaign’s intro sequence. Appearing in space are friends of Zerxus, other players from them A disaster.
“I think there is a hidden desire on our part to include everyone from it A disaster at some point,” Willingham said. And with multiple role-playing projects in development with Amazon Studios, including The Mighty Nein series coming next year, full A disaster practice of another type may not be too far off.
“It’s perfect for a movie, a mini-series, something — we’re just trying to figure out the best way to deliver it and how it can fit into everything,” Willingham said.

For now, however, it looks like we haven’t seen the last of Zerxus Ilerez The Legend of Vox Machina. When Pike and his friends escape with the Plate of the Dawnmartyr, he utters the shocking words: “We are his blood. The time of his ascension is drawing near.”
Words that echo those spoken by Delilah Briarwood (voiced by Gray Griffin) and the other cultists of the Whispered One – also known as Vecna ​​in the first campaign – from back in Season 1. Could this mean that The Legend of Vox Machina do you rank Zerxus as the master of Whispers? And if so, does that mean the series includes the Whispered One and Asmodeus? Or Xerxus chose to serve another god in hopes of trying to redeem him, as he hoped to do with Asmodeus A disaster?
“Redemption Paladin is yet to be released,” Marisha Ray, the voice of Keyleth, told Mashable. (Ray is also an executive producer on the show, as well as a Key Role Creative Director.) “I think it’s very appropriate, because there are few companies in the world of Exandria that would fit that ticket to maybe be redeemed.”
“We hope to see conspiracy theories [about that line],” added Willingham.
On top of positive fan feedback, Zerxus’ addition to it The Legend of Vox Machina is further proof of why this show is one of the most interesting adaptations on television today. Zerxus didn’t even exist as a character when the first Critical Role campaign came out – audiences didn’t even get to meet him until months after Season 1. The Legend of Vox Machina started. But as Key Role continues to grow through its various campaigns, it is creating more sources of information to adapt to animated scenarios for real-time capture.
“One of my favorite things about working on an animated show is that after the Vox Machina campaign ended, we continued to expand and enrich the world and build history. We’re creating stories for the future, but we’re also expanding on what was in the past,” Liam O. ‘Brien, Vax’ildan’s voice and executive producer, told Mashable.
“That’s the best thing about adaptation. You can go through and sprinkle in some cool stuff that wasn’t there before,” Ray added.
He continued: “I think we’re really lucky in the sense that we’re making progress The Mighty Nein in real time with The Legend of Vox Machinaand continuing to film campaign 3 and related material. So we have this 5,000-foot view of everything — except for all the things that have to be decided at the end of Campaign 3 — but we can take the Jenga blocks of the story and move them so they fit together.”
Therefore The Legend of Vox Machina continues to run, see important links to other Important Role campaigns. Zerxus may be the first A disaster crossover, but by the sounds of it, it probably won’t be the last.
