Harley-Davidson recalls 41,000 motorcycles over wiring problem that could cause power loss

Harley-Davidson is recalling about 41,600 motorcycles over concerns that wiring inside the bikes could short-circuit and cause a loss of power.

The company said in a report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the recalled 2024 FLHX, FLHXSE, FLTRX, FLTRXSE and FLTRXSTSE motorcycles could have a short circuit if their power cables are rubbing against the crankcase.

“In the event of a short to ground, the main 60-amp fuse may open, resulting in loss of propulsion, combined with loss of all electrical power, without warning the passenger,” the recall said. “The unexpected loss of propulsion combined with the loss of all electrical power while moving, without being able to restart, may increase the risk of a crash.”

Harley-Davidson notified customers of the recall this week.

The recalled motorcycles, the FLHX and FLTRX were built in late October 2023 and this July, according to the report. Meanwhile, the production of others takes place between November 2023 and July.

Authorized Harley-Davidson dealers will repair returned motorcycles free of charge.

Addressing the problem “will include an inspection of the electrical wiring and the installation of a second backup belt,” according to the report.

Recalled motorcycles with damaged power steering cables will get the same wiring extension as others, he said.

The company incorporated a solution to the issue into its production plan in late July.

“We are not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition,” Harley-Davidson said in a recall report.
