Economic liberalization that began in the 1990s appears to have benefited Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Delhi the most as their share in the national GDP grew significantly between 1990-91 and 2023-24, according to a working paper by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM).
Maharashtra’s share in national GDP has declined from 14.6 percent in 1990-91 to 13.3 percent in 2023-24. It still maintains the top position among the states. Although Tamil Nadu’s share has declined, from 8.7 percent in 1960-61 to 7.1 percent in 1990-91, it has seen a turnaround, with its share in national GDP reaching 8.9 percent in 2023-24.
Gujarat also saw a change in its wealth with its share touching 8.1 per cent in 2022-23 from 6.4 per cent in 1990-91.
The rise of Bengaluru as a technology hub has seen Karnataka’s share increase from 5.3 per cent in 1990-91 to 8.2 per cent in 2023-24.
