Alphabet’s GOOGL.O Google is testing whether it displays tags next to certain companies in its search results, a company spokeswoman said Friday, in an effort aimed at helping users identify authentic sources and avoid fake websites.
Fake websites masquerading as legitimate businesses or services can enter Internet search results, leading users to view false information about the business, deceiving users and damaging the brand.
“We regularly test features that help consumers identify trustworthy businesses online, and we’re currently running a small trial that displays checkmarks around certain businesses on Google,” a spokesperson said.

Google already uses automated systems to identify pages with “scam” or fraudulent content and prevent them from appearing in search results.
The Verge reported the development earlier Friday, adding that it had seen blue verified markers next to official site links for companies including Microsoft MSFT.O, Meta META.O and Apple AAPL.O in search results.

Only some users have been able to see the feature, The Verge said, indicating that Google hasn’t started wide testing yet.
