Matt MurphyTony Award winning actor Gavin Creel he died at the age of 48.
Creel died at his home in New York on Monday, September 30. His death has been confirmed Us Weekly for his partner, Alex Temple Wardthrough a public spokesperson.
The cause of his death was metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma, which Creel was diagnosed with in July. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are a rare type of cancer that starts in the spinal cord and travels through the body through the nerves, the Mayo Clinic reports.
According to Playbill, Creel was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering before beginning hospice care at home.

Creel made his broadway debut in 2002, playing Jimmy Smith in Totally Modern Millie. He won a Tony Award for this role.
During his career, Creel starred in productions of The hair – where he received a Tony Award nomination – La Cage Aux Folles, You Love Me, The Book of Mormon again Waitress. He received a Tony Award for his performance Hello, Dolly! like Cornelius Hackl in 2017.
Creel reflected on his award during his 2018 interview San Francisco Chronicle. “Tony felt like he really embraced the community I’ve lived in for 20 years,” he said. “That sounds good. I can’t do anything else in my life and still be a Tony winner. I wouldn’t do that.”
Off Broadway, Creel also played roles on TV, including Eloise at the Plaza again Eloise at Christmas time. He also appeared in the middle Ryan Murphy‘s American Horror Stories.
In 2021, Creel opened up about his role as a gay man in the horror series – which he called his favorite part about the experience of working on the show.
“I want to tell more gay stories,” he told Theatrical at the time. “Ryan Murphy is a hero for putting especially the gay community and issues on screen. I’m so excited to be a gay character that’s interesting, weird, and complex, and not just stereotypes. He writes and acts and produces all different types of such stories. If I never play a straight person, that’s fine with me. I want it to be fun or some complex, beautiful, deep, rich, weird, scary character that just happens to appeal to men, you know? And I’m very happy to do just that.”
Creel is survived by Ward, his parents Nancy Clemens Creel again James William Creel and his sister Heather Elise Creel again Allyson Jo Creel.
