Charles Leclerc has been awarded as the new winner of the 2024 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
“I mean it hasn’t been an easy weekend so far. I have been struggling with the car but I was confident that in the race the feeling was better,” said the Ferrari driver, 27, on Sunday, October 20. The New York Times. “And so it was.”
He went on to say, “We weren’t scared … we weren’t scared but we thought that others would improve a lot today, and we were still strong.” So, I’m very happy with both of the team. We couldn’t have dreamed of anything better.”
Ferrari partner Carlos Sainz Jr. placed second Sunday at the event, which was held in Austin, Texas, and shared a message supporting Leclerc.
“First of all, I congratulate the whole team. For Charles, with surprising effect. It’s a result that puts us where we want to be,” Sainz Jr., 30, said. The NYT. “At that moment, obviously, I knew that the race would be decided at the start. That Lando [Norris] again Size [Verstappen] I was going hard into it in Turn 1 and unfortunately, I got too bad and couldn’t take the lead.
He continued, “Still, it was a good race…I’m really enjoying it and I hope it continues like this until the end of the year.”
Verstappen, 27, came in third despite Norris’ efforts to chase down the Red Bull driver. With less than five laps to go, Norris, 24, passed Verstappen but got out of the way. He was penalized by stewards for five seconds on the final lap for “leaving the track and gaining an advantage,” according to the report. The NYT. This penalty resulted in him being placed in fourth place.
After the end of the race on Sunday, Verstappen called it “really tough”. “I’ve never had the speed to attack. So it’s a little different compared to yesterday. Just going slow, it’s hard to hold the brakes,” he said The NYT. “So that made it a lot harder to defend because every time someone wanted to move, I couldn’t really break that time.”
He continued, “But it was a tough fight. I tried everything I could to save it [Norris] behind and because in the end, being on the podium is a good result.”
While reflecting on the race, Norris expressed disappointment with his placement. “[Verstappen] he went out and on the track maybe he was going too fast. He has crossed the finish line [at turn one] and has protected from going off the track. Max drove well, defended well,” Norris told Sky Sports Daily Mail. “Maybe we ended up where we expected. I will be [liked] the third time and we thought we deserved the third time. It was a tough weekend from the start.”
