Two Ethereum Foundation researchers Justin Drake and Dankrad Feist have revealed their decision to step down from their advisory positions with EigenLayer. The two experts held this role with a repatriation plan at the beginning of May 2024 – but much to the dismay of the crypto community.
As reported by Bitcoinist, prominent crypto figures have taken the initiative to join EigenLayer as advisors, with Drake directly pledging to invest his ETH earnings. However, the crypto community on social media X has raised its concerns about the conflict of interest surrounding the appointment of Ethereum researchers.
Justin Drake Apologizes To Ethereum Community And Foundation
In a November 2 post on X, Justin Drake announced that he is stepping down from an advisory role with EigenLayer in September 2024 and has left the Ultra Sound team. The researcher also apologized to the Ethereum community and his colleagues for the controversy surrounding his appointment.
Drake added in the post:
Going forward I will reject all counseling, angel investing, and security councils. This privacy policy goes above and beyond the latest EF [Ethereum Foundation]- Broad conflict of interest policy, not because that was asked of me but because I want to sign [a] commitment to neutrality.
As highlighted in Drake’s message, the crossover to Eigenlayer by two researchers forced the Ethereum Foundation to create a conflict of interest policy to avoid the recurrence of such incidents. Following these steps, executive director Aya Miyaguchi was the first to show the organization’s commitment to solving the conflict of interest problem.

Further development of Danksharding?
Sadly, Dankrad Feist simultaneously released a message on X announcing his decision to resign from his advisory position at EigenLayer. The famous creator of the “Danksharding” concept reiterated that although the contract was negotiated in good faith, he understands how the relationship with EigenLayer can be easily misunderstood.
Feist commented:
Eigenlayer is a great project that I hope will continue to complement Ethereum in several ways. But Ethereum has a lot of important work to do and I will focus all my attention on doing it. This will allow me to be more successful in implementing Danksharding and other important projects.
These announcements received positive responses from the crypto community on the X platform, with several notable figures labeling their decision to leave EigenLayer a good call.
