Although both artists have found great success in the music industry, the rapper and the “Fantasy” singer struggled to put their feelings aside and make peace after Eminem said they were dating.
“I don’t want to say something insulting because I respect him as a singer but on a personal level I don’t feel good. I just don’t like him as a person,” said Eminem Rolling Stone in 2002. “I have to be honest; I learned a lesson from it: Don’t believe the hype. I respect him, but he has nothing to do with everything. I will just say that she is a beautiful woman.”
According to Carey, she never had a romantic relationship with Eminem. Instead, the artist is only looking at their short term as a professional.
Over the years, this controversy has included everything from diss tracks to shady conversations. Things didn’t get any better when Carey started singing “Obsessed” from Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel — then dressed as an Eminem lookalike in the song’s official music video

While listening to Eminem’s album The Eminem Showviewers saw the rapper’s shout-out to Carey in the song “Superman.”
“What are you trying to be? My new wife?” he rapped on the track. “What, you Mariah? Go twice.” In a separate song titled “When the Music Is,” Eminem said, “What the—you taking it for me, a joke? Do you smoke crack? ‘Before I do that, I will beg Mariah to take me back.
December 2002
On his album The CharmbraceletCarey appears to address her relationship with Eminem in a song titled “Clown.”
“You never said we were lovers,” he sang, “you know very well that we never even touched.”
In a separate interview no Larry KingCarey clarified how close she is with the rapper. “I sat with him, I talked to him on the phone. I think I was with him four times in total,” she said. “And I don’t consider that dating someone.”
2003
I The New York Post reports that Eminem saved several “long, rambling” voicemails from Carey that he could use in the song. In response to the rumors, Carey told the publication, “I don’t know what you’re doing. It’s a bit extreme. Doesn’t it look like a little girl? It’s like we’re fighting each other.”
2006
In his song “Jimmy Crack Corn,” Eminem reignited his rivalry with Carey. “Your mind is on us like mine is on Mariah,” he rapped. “And you are all like him, you are all liars.” Later that year, it is said that he went on Shade 45 radio and said that he had been in a relationship with the singer for about seven months.
“I didn’t really fit into what he was; our personalities clashed,” he said. “She’s a diva, and I’m a little used to it, I guess.”
2009

(Larry Busacca/WireImage)Nick Cannon entered the discussion! In his song “Bagpipes From Baghdad,” Eminem chose to spotlight Carey and his collaborator of the time. “Mariah, what happened to us? / Why did we have to break up?” he rapped. “Nick Cannon, you pck, good luck with the f-in’ whore.”
Cannon was not impressed with Eminem’s song and chose to sound off in a blog post. “I thought we were past the days when white people could spit obscenities at our beautiful queens and run away,” she wrote in a since-deleted letter. “So, Miss Marshall, I’m going to make you wish you never mentioned my name and regret the bad things you say about my wife.”
Several diss tracks followed, with Carey releasing “Obsessed” and Eminem releasing “The Warning.” (In the “Obsessed” video, Carey was famously in drag as a man who looked a lot like Eminem.)
2010
In interview no The Vibe Eminem showed signs that he wants to leave this fight. “I don’t really want to talk about him anymore,” he told the publication. “I don’t want to keep beating a dead horse. I will not comment on it. I’m done with that whole situation. I said what I said. I’m done.”
2016

Denise Truscello/Getty Images for Live NationAfter Cannon finalized her divorce from Carey after six years of marriage, the first America’s Got Talent The host decided to reflect on why he got involved in the Eminem saga. “The way Eminem started I never had a problem with him,” he told DX News. “If anything, I was one of his biggest fans, but if another man crosses the line of disrespect, you have to deal with it.”
2019
While appearing The TI of On the “ExpediTlously” podcast, Cannon revealed that Eminem had apologized. Things changed, however, when Eminem showed up Fat Joesingle “Lord Above.” In his part of the song, the star called Carey a “nut job.”
2020
After Carey released his memoir, Definition of Mariah Careyreaders discovered that Eminem was not mentioned. When asked why he didn’t write the last pages, he explained Variety: “There [are] some songs I could sing in response to that, but I won’t. … If someone or something had nothing to do with the real meaning of Mariah Carey, like the subject, they are not in the book.”
