As wildfires ravage California, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced that SpaceX will provide free Starlink terminals to affected areas in Los Angeles.
He made the announcement while retweeting photos of a journalist claiming the Starlink internet service had a connection.
The reporter said Starlink “is the only reason we can hear and communicate with you right now because there is absolutely no cell service in this area.”

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., called on Musk to use his money and social media platform X to help poor families whose homes and businesses were destroyed during the devastating wildfires.
Swalwell made the comments after Musk shared a video, which he said a friend in Los Angeles had taken, showing images of the destruction.
“This is very sad. Elon, I believe you want to help as much as I do. I will use my work on the Homeland Security Committee to keep an open mind: concerns about the cause of the fire / response,” Swalwell said in response. video shared by Musk.
“Can you use this platform and your money to help poor families who have lost their homes/workplaces?” asked the congressman.

Musk said the wildfires in the Golden State could have been prevented, but laws are getting in the way of taking measures to prevent infernos.
“These fires are easily preventable, but ridiculous laws in California prevent action being taken, so every year homes burn and more people die,” Musk said in the X song.
“A friend of mine just sent me a message that his house burned down again. His old house also burned down in an out-of-control wildfire a few years ago. California can easily stop these big wildfires, but they refuse to bomb them for unnatural reasons,” he said. in a separate post.
