Ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the issue of Maratha reservation is in the air.
The Marathas, who comprise about 33 percent of Maharashtra’s population, have been demanding reservation in education and government jobs for more than a decade. In 2019, the state government gave them 16 percent reservation, which is more than the 50 percent set by the Supreme Court.
In 2021, the Supreme Court struck down the 16 percent quota, citing a 50 percent share. Since then, protests have resumed, often leading to violent riots.
