West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Kumar on Sunday said the responsibility of checking the entry of people from Bangladesh rests with the Border Security Force (BSF), saying that the state’s police have successfully handled the issue despite the “deficiency” of the security forces. .
The IPS officer praised the police for their work, saying that they have not successfully dealt with the issue of immigration. He assured the people of the state that the police are monitoring the situation in the neighboring country while talking about their past success in fighting left and right extremists.
“It is the responsibility of the BSF to look into the issue of infiltration. Despite various challenges, we (state police) are doing a good job,” Kumar said about the increasing infiltration along the international border.
The DGP, who was speaking to reporters at the state police headquarters, was accompanied by ADG and IGP of the state intelligence branch, Javed Shamim, and Kolkata police commissioner Manoj Verma.
“The West Bengal police are professional soldiers. We want to assure the people of the state that we are vigilant about the situation in Bangladesh. In the past, we successfully handled left and right extremism. We will do it again,” Kumar assured.
“Even if a person enters India through Meghalaya’s Tura, he has to pass through West Bengal to reach other states. The situation in Bangladesh is fragile and we don’t want its consequences here,” said an IPS officer.
Indirectly criticizing the performance of the BSF, Kumar alleged several gaps in its management of border security. “West Bengal is the only state with three borders. The BSF is responsible for protecting the borders, but its operations have several flaws. Recently, many people have crossed the border into Bengal, but we are taking action. We arrest the attackers and ensure that they are handed over to the appropriate authorities,” he said.
Kumar praised the police for their role in arresting ‘Tehreek-e-Mujahideen’ terrorists hiding in the state and said that the Special Task Force (STF) tracked the person for two days before alerting the Kashmir Police.
“We are doing our work quietly. We tracked the Kashmiri terrorist for two days based on the information of the district STF. Then we informed the Kashmir Police. We cannot share much information about the investigation,” he said.
