Dodgers hope Freddie Freeman will return to lineup for NLDS Game 3 vs. Padres

The Los Angeles Dodgers hope All-Star Freddie Freeman will return to the lineup Tuesday night in Game 3 of their NL Division series against the San Diego Padres (airing on FS1 at 9:08 pm ET).

Freeman left Game 2 after five innings Sunday night, when Los Angeles lost 10-2 at Dodger Stadium to even the series at 1.

Freeman was not feeling well in his right ankle. Max Muncy was initially replaced, and Kiké Hernández came in third.

Freeman hit and walked in two of his at-bats. In Game 1 on Saturday, he had two goals and a strikeout.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Freeman was “still sore” on Monday, during the Dodgers’ practice at Petco Park. “He’s getting treatment. He doesn’t know anything else. Other than that, I think he’s very grateful for the peace of mind today.”

“The thought is that he will play tomorrow. If he can’t, he won’t play,” said Roberts. “But again, if he can play and post, he’ll be there.”

Freeman, 35, an eight-time All-Star, said it’s the first time he’s ever sprained his ankle. He said he was told that injuries usually result in four to six weeks on the injured list.

The slugger carries a powerful bat as the No. 3 hitter behind leadoff batters Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts while playing key defense at first.

Freeman missed 15 games in the regular season due to injuries and his youngest son’s health issues.
