Demolition of unauthorized parts of the Dharavi mosque in Mumbai has begun, the office of the trust that manages the place of worship said on Monday.
A report about the demolition of the houses has been submitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the office told PTI.
“Since the mosque is surrounded by slums, it may take some time to complete the demolition,” he added.
On September 21, hundreds of residents had blocked a 90-metre road in Dharavi to stop the BMC team from demolishing illegal parts of the mosque.
To defuse the situation, the trustees of the mosque held talks and submitted a written request to the deputy commissioner and assistant commissioner of the BMC ward in G North seeking four to five days to remove the parts.
During the protest, some people allegedly pelted stones at the BMC vehicle, breaking the windshield, after which an FIR was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Maharashtra Police Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
