A day after Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered the Delhi police commissioner to take “strict action” against “illegal Bangladeshi immigrants” living in the Capital, the police on Wednesday launched a crackdown on such people.
The program was conducted in different areas of the city, including Kalindi Kunj, Uttam Nagar, Shaheen Bagh and Jamia Nagar, where the police checked the documents of people living in slums, footpaths and unauthorized areas, police said.
“Some of them who did not have the proper documents were brought to the police station for investigation… If it is found that they are illegal immigrants, they will be deported,” said the police officer.
“We visit colonies, settlements and any other place where we suspect illegal immigrants are living. We check their documents, even those documents from Assam or neighboring states of Bangladesh… we verify the details. Those who are found to be staying illegally will be booked under the Foreigners Act and deported,” the officer added.
Police say it’s a routine job he’s following. In the past, illegal immigrants – either Nigerians or Bangladeshis – have been deported, they added.
The move comes after a delegation of Ulemas (clerics) and Muslim leaders from Hazrat Nizamuddin met LG VK Saxena on Saturday and expressed concern over the treatment of minority communities in Bangladesh and urged strict action against those entering the city, the LG’s Office said in a note. .
It also directed the secretary-general to provide a time-bound response on the submission of weekly progress reports on the matter.
