The Delhi High Court on Friday sought the agency’s position on former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy’s plea seeking court directions to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) over his allegations regarding Congressman Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship status.
Standing before a bench of Acting Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, the court sought “assistance” from government lawyers before passing any order. Government counsel Apoorv Kurup has now been appointed as senior advocate. The petition was adjourned to the 13th of January next.
In November, the HC expressed its concern that adjudicating Swamy’s plea could lead to “two parallel trials” on the same issue, like another plea by Vignesh Shishir, a BJP worker from Bengaluru, challenging Gandhi’s alleged citizenship and seeking a CBI probe. matter, is pending before the Allahabad HC.
The Allahabad HC is expected to hear their plea on December 19 where it has directed the MHA to inform the court about the status of Shishir’s representation made to the MHA.
