“Dull skin usually refers to skin that isn’t bright and looks flat, sometimes even dry,” said Dr. Scott. At the skin level, this is usually caused by a build-up of dead skin cells, a decrease in skin hydration, or a decrease in blood circulation to the face (and often a combination of these)!”

External factors cause dull skin. It is your body that tells you that something needs to change. If your skin is dull, try examining your lifestyle and skin care routine to see what’s missing.

According to Dr. Scott, common causes of dull skin include:

  • Getting old. As cell turnover slows, elastin and collagen production slows—and your natural glow diminishes. Try taking a collagen supplement and using skincare products that increase cell proliferation.

For healthy, glowing skin, Dr. Scott recommends “combining regular exercise, getting enough sleep, reducing stress, and eating a healthy diet.”

From scrubs to serums and cleansers, this step is important to “reduce the accumulation of dead skin cells,” says Dr. “A mild chemical exfoliant can be used a few times a week.
