‘Culture of Threats, Sexual Harassment’: RG Kar Fires 10 Aspiring Students, Doctors Amid Safety Concerns

Last update:

After the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata raised serious concerns about the safety of health workers, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Saturday dismissed ten people, including doctors, house staff, and trainees, for allegedly threatening students, physically and mentally. mental abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, and buying drugs and alcohol.

Among the 10 dismissed professionals is Ashish Pandey of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who was arrested by the CBI for his alleged role in financial irregularities at the hospital between 2021 and 2024.

The move came after the medical college authorities held a special meeting of the college council on Saturday and considered the report of the Institutional Inquiry Committee that found the staff and students guilty and decided to expel them until further notice.

In addition, the council has also referred the names of 49 others, who are facing charges of sexual harassment against women, to RG Kar’s internal complaints committee for investigation and disciplinary action.

After the horrific incident of rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, a section of junior doctors started a widespread protest demanding justice and registered complaints of “dangerous behaviour” on campus.

Acting on the complaint, the RG Kar authorities on September 10 sent notices to several doctors, interns and house staff for alleged conduct promoting a culture of intimidation. They were called before the investigation committee. After the hearing and investigation by the inquiry committee, the report was sent to the college authorities.
