Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Manipur’s Ukhrul town after gunfire broke out between two groups on Wednesday over cleaning the area as part of the ‘Swachhata Abhiyan’, officials said.
Both sides belong to the Naga community but they are two separate villages, and they are demanding land, they said.

Some people were also injured during the exchange of fire, and the Assam Rifles were deployed to control the situation, said the police.
In the order imposing these restrictions, Ukhrul Sub-Divisional Magistrate D Kamei referred to a letter he received from the SP regarding “concerns” about the “social work” organized by the Thawaijao Hungpung Young Students’ Organization (THYSO), and opposition to it. Hunphun area is Hunphun Village Authority.
“Also regarding the land dispute between the villages of Hunphun and Hungpung may cause a law and order problem that may lead to a breach of peace and social peace between the two villages. And whereas, such a disturbance may cause a serious breach of peace, public order. , and danger to people’s lives and their property,” said the order .
“Now, therefore… using the powers conferred under Clause 1 of Section 163 BNSS, 2023, we hereby issue an order prohibiting any person outside of their residences and any other act or action that may interfere with the existing law order in the scheduled area from 9:30 AM on October 2, 2024 until further orders,” it added.
