By accepting crypto for taxes and other local municipal payments, Detroit will become the largest city in the United States to accept crypto for payments.
The project is scheduled to begin in mid-2025, according to local Detroit officials. This move is expected to work in a secure environment managed by PayPal.
Detroit wants to embrace cryptocurrencies with its ambitions to open up blockchain applications in municipal contexts. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says the plan is focused on the future, saying:
“Detroit is building a technology-friendly environment that empowers its residents and entrepreneurs.”
Installation with Modern Payment Options
The new program is designed to benefit users and marginalized groups. According to City Treasurer Nikhil Patel, this new method will provide citizens with more digital payment options, thus promoting easy access to all forms of finance, especially for the unbanked.
Patel says:
“Treasury is committed to modernizing our payment systems to improve the customer experience and improve internal efficiency.”
In this regard, this program aims to make it easier and more convenient for all Detroit residents to pay property taxes, municipal fees, and permits.
Blockchain Founders Call
Detroit is inviting blockchain entrepreneurs to participate led by Justin Onwenu, the city’s first Director of Business and Economic Opportunity. The new initiative seeks proposals for civic blockchain solutions, with a deadline of December 15, 2024.
Proposed by the entrepreneur, the proposal must be complete and include all aspects in terms of risk potential, cost assessment, and stakeholders. The goal of this project: Identify the brightest and best minds and make sure Detroit serves as a precursor to blockchain-powered social development.

Global Adoption of Crypto Trend
The acceptance of cryptocurrencies as payment in Detroit is part of a larger trend in the United States. Currently, Colorado leads the list by being one of the states that will allow payments from last September 2022.
Next on the list are Utah, Louisiana, and Colorado, all of which now allow the acceptance of digital currency for state payments. Smaller cities like Williston, North Dakota, and Miami Lakes, Florida have also started using the crypto feature of BitPay and PayPal for their municipal payments.
Leading the Way to the Big Cities
Few major cities have yet to establish active crypto payment systems, despite the fact that many are showing interest in cryptocurrencies. Miami launched MiamiCoin but does not accept crypto as legal tender, and New York City, although supportive, has not included crypto payments.
Detroit’s system could set a strong precedent for other cities to adopt, offering secure PayPal transactions that convert to US dollars, expanding payment options while ensuring stability.
