Friday, 8 November, was the last day of DY Chandrachud’s tenure as the Chief Justice of India. On his last day of work, DY Chandrachud reflected on his judicial journey with gratitude and humility. Sharing his thoughts and appreciation, he addressed a courtroom full of colleagues and members of the legal team, revealing the essence of his administration. The outgoing Chief Justice also asked for forgiveness from those who were unknowingly hurt by him.
“Yesterday evening, when my judge asked me when the ceremony should be held, I was told that at 2 pm because we can wrap up many things. I asked myself if anyone will come to this court at 2 pm on Friday afternoon,” he said. with a smile. “Or will I watch myself on the screen?”
Justice Chandrachud took a moment to express his admiration for judicial culture, noting that as a young lawyer, he saw the art of argument and learned important courtroom techniques. “We are here as pilgrims to work, the work we do can make or break cases, there were great judges who decorated this court and passed this baton,” he said.
“There will be no difference if I leave this court because a stable person like Justice Khanna will take over and he has dignity,” he said, showing confidence in the future of the institution under his successor.
Thinking about what supported him in his journey, he said, “If you ask me what drives you forward, this is what has stopped me. It is a journey of judgment. I thank each and every one of you, and you have all taught me. I have learned a lot about life today in the 45 cases that I have handled.
In a deep moment, Chandrachud asked for forgiveness for any unintentional harm. He said, “If I ever hurt any of you, I want to apologize for anything I didn’t mean to do or hurt you.”
Chief Justice Chandrachud’s tenure, which began on November 8, 2022, ended on a note of humility and respect for the legal profession. With these words, he stood up, marking the end of his last working day as the Chief Justice of India.
