Both houses were adjourned within minutes of meeting on Thursday (December 19, 2024) as opposition members insisted on a debate over Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar.
In the Lok Sabha, as soon as the House met, the opposition members were on their feet raising their voices in protest. Speaker Om Birla tried to calm them down and announced the demise of former union minister EVKS Elangovan, a former Lok Sabha Member from Tamil Nadu.
After he paid tribute to the late leader, the House was silent for a while.
When the funeral procession ended, the opposition members again made loud protests. Mr. Birla immediately adjourned the House till 2 pm

Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, after the presentation of the listed documents, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said that he received four adjournment notices, including three to discuss Mr.
As the Chairman did not accept notices under Rule 267, several opposition members protested. Notices were given by AAP MP Sanjay Singh, MP Randeep Surjewala and CPI (M) MP John Brittas One of the Congress MPs is heard saying that Ambedkar was never insulted “like this”.
Several opposition members were on their feet and raised slogans “We will not allow the country to fall into chaos,” Mr Dhankhar said before adjourning the proceedings until 2pm.
Congress and other opposition parties attacked Mr. Shah for his remarks on Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday (December 17, 2024) and demanded his dismissal, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP leaders gathered in Mr. Shah also said that he had exposed the “anti-Ambedkar” stand of the Congress.
Mr. Shah said the Congress distorted his comments under a vicious campaign after the discussion on the Constitution “established” that the opposition was against Ambedkar and reservation.
