The Mumbai Police has filed a closure report in the case of alleged embezzlement of funds raised to save the warship INS Vikrant, giving it a clean chit. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya and his son Neil Somaiya.

Earlier in August, the Economic Offense Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police had filed a closure report, but the court rejected it, saying that adequate investigation was not done. Now, after the revised closing report (summary report C), the final acceptance is awaited.
The complaint against the BJP leader and others alleges that between 2013 and 2014, Somaiya started a public fundraising campaign to save INS Vikrant, India’s first warship, which was to be decommissioned after decommissioning.
With the aim of converting the warship into a museum, Somaiya, his son Neil, and others ran a fundraising campaign titled ‘Vikrant Wachwa’ (Save Vikrant in Marathi) and collected millions of rupees, a complaint was filed by ex-serviceman Sepoy Baban Bhimrao. Bhosale said.
The complaint stated that a document obtained under the Right to Information Act revealed that the money was not deposited in the Maharashtra Governor’s office. It says Somaiya collected around Rs 57 crores from various places in Mumbai and misappropriated the money.
The complaint was filed when the BJP contested in Maharashtra, and Uddhav Thackeray was the Chief Minister.
However, in their closing report, the police revealed that their investigation found no evidence of misuse of funds by Somaiya and his son.
