Ahead of their 28th wedding anniversary, the couple shared that they had trouble communicating after their children left the house.

“Billy and I have very dangerous nest syndrome and we hit walls when it comes to finding mutual interests! It’s a scary truth that we both feel uncomfortable admitting,” Phillips said in a YouTube video. “We try to stay hopeful that we can have a meeting of the minds and find things that we both find encouraging.”

Phillips admitted that he believes his interest in religion has led to a “power struggle” between him and Baldwin.

“I’ve been with Billy for 32 years, and we have a wonderful marriage, but we’ve definitely had the hardest few years of our lives,” Phillips said in a YouTube livestream. “I think it’s because I just went deep into Jesus, and I think he didn’t know what to do with that.”

He also revealed that embracing his faith has made him a different person than he was when the two first met.

“I’m not the person I was 30 years ago, and I refuse to have the same marriage we had 30 years ago,” Phillips explained. “It is time for us to mature and grow. He was on board, but I think for him it was like, ‘Well, you’re not my focus.’

He is the one I want to have a very healthy relationship with. But sometimes I don’t. Despite the progress in their relationship, Phillips admitted that he doesn’t want to “cause” Baldwin.

“The truth is that me having that fear prevents us from being really close, because it prevents me from confiding in him and I try to guard his feelings, but I still cause many problems in our marriage by doing that,” he explained. “I’m shooting myself in the foot.”

November 2024

Phillips revealed in a YouTube video that the couple started it living in separate houses but it was not separated.

“Billy and I are in this new kind of arrangement that really works for me. “I don’t know if it works for Billster, but I’m very happy with what we’re doing,” Phillips said in the clip. “I really felt like, where in the Bible does it say I have to live under the same roof 24/7 with my husband? Can you please get me that document?”

Phillips clarified that she and Baldwin still often meet for nights out, therapy sessions and more.

“We enjoy being together. That is what is difficult to explain to people: that we are madly in love, we enjoy being together, we celebrate our marriage, we never want to be separated,” he explained. “We need a little time apart because we don’t understand each other. And it’s okay, I’m sure a lot of different couples don’t get along.”
