As one of the OG things stamped after those Black Friday clips you’re snapping at right now, we know from most of our adult lives that Black Friday is one of the best times of the year to buy TV.

The types of TVs featured in pre-holiday sales have changed, however. The biggest factor when upgrading your TV this year will probably be the familiarity – and later, the affordability – of QLED. In the past few years, QLED TVs have officially moved out of the “coolest TV you know” into the reach of the average home. Finding a 55-inch QLED under $300 or a 65-inch QLED under $500 during an event like Black Friday isn’t hard at all.

Are the best TV deals at Amazon or Best Buy?

Either way, the types of TV deals you can get can depend on which retailer you’re looking at. In our experience, Best Buy specializes in larger screens and has a larger selection of premium QLED and OLED models from Samsung, Sony, and LG for sale. Amazon is gearing its TV discounts heavily on 43- to 65-inch Fire TVs, especially its in-house models. Walmart is known for one or two model doorbusters that will make your jaw drop, but they may sell out quickly.

Why we love you

Remember when we said that QLEDs are now within reach of the average household? At $249.99, this 55-inch QLED hovers around the same price point as most mainstream LED TVs that were around a few years ago — back then, $250 was a good price for a mid-range TV even if it wasn’t 4K. Now, we can see this Hisense QLED 55-inch is the first TV for adults bought by a ton of people.

The difference between those two cheaper TVs is that the “Q” in QLED stands for quantum dots, which create a layer of extra light on top of a standard LED panel to pump fuller colors onto the screen. QLED TVs are also brighter than standard LED TVs, making them ideal for watching sports, especially during the day.
