Bengaluru: A call from a service station leads the police to a bike thief

A call made by the staff of the service center to the owner of the motorcycle helped the Chintamani police to catch a 28-year-old car thief who was involved in the theft of 11 bikes.

The accused, identified as Bangarappa, a daily wage laborer by day and a car thief by night, stole a bike from NR Layout in Chintamani on December 18. He later took it to Madanapalli and sold it for Rs 10,000 without documents.

The buyer took the bike to the service center in Madanapalli for repairs and asked the staff to call him when it was ready. However, the staff discarded his contact number even after the service and called the original owner’s number which they found after checking the registration number.

The original owner of the bike, who had lodged a complaint at the time, was shocked when the staff at the Madanapalli service center told him to take the bike. He got the address and rushed to Madanapalli and the police traced the person who bought the bike and traced Bangarappa.

Based on his confession, the police recovered about 11 stolen bikes from Maluru, Kolar, Chintamani and Attibele police station limits worth more than Rs 6 lakh. The suspects also stole copper locks from houses and sold them, said the police.
