An Australian Air Force One flight attendant was taken to hospital after an “unusual smell” led to an unexpected diversion on Wednesday.
Qantas flight QF163 departed Sydney on Wednesday evening and was due in Wellington, New Zealand, before flying to the Emerald City.
The Boeing 737 was in the air for more than two hours before it landed on the runway at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport just after 9pm, according to information provided by Flight Aware.
Qantas, the flag carrier of Australia, told FOX Business that a strange smell on the plane caused the plane to divert.

“A flight from Sydney to Wellington returned to Sydney after reports of a strange smell in the cabin,” the spokesperson said. “The plane landed safely and will be checked by engineers before returning to work.”
The spokesperson noted that the flight attendant was taken to the hospital for evaluation, but did not disclose the employee’s symptoms or condition. No passengers or pilots were affected.
It was reported that there was no smoke in the cabin, and the diversion was not considered an emergency stay.

The representative added that Qantas is working to accommodate passengers affected by the road.
“Customers will be accommodated and re-boarded on the next available flight,” the statement added.
“We apologize for the disruption to their journey and appreciate their understanding.”
