The Assam government will observe May 13 as ‘Anti-Superstition Day’, an official notification said.

The notification was issued by the Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya to commemorate this day on May 13 in an effort to raise awareness of harmful superstitions in society and to promote scientific literacy, logical thinking and critical decision-making in a systematic manner, the official said. said on Thursday.

May 13 has been designated as “Against Superstitions Day” as the famous social activist and Padma Shri awardee Birubal Rabha who campaigned against witch hunting in the state died on that day in 2024.

According to this notice, the Department of School Education and the Department of Higher Education will hold some awareness events in different educational institutions on this day, focusing on scientific topics and rational thinking.

The Department of Health and Family Welfare will promote and disseminate information on common health-related superstitions prevalent in the community through mass media channels.

The Panchayat and Rural Development Department will organize special gram sabhas in all state gram panchayats on that day and invite doctors/academics/representatives of scientific societies/local social workers to highlight issues related to the harmful effects of superstitions.

Places and areas that bear witness to past witch-hunt incidents should be given special focus, the notification said.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development, in collaboration with NGOs, CBOs and other community groups working in this sector, will organize meetings and awareness campaigns.

The Department of Science and Technology is already carrying out various activities related to the anti-superstition campaign across the state through its social network.

To commemorate the “Anti-Superstition Day”, activities will be actively carried out by Aryabhatta Science Centers spread across 219 districts of the state besides relevant centers and eco-clubs to spread the message of scientific and rational thinking.

All other departments will also take steps to create awareness about superstitions, as may be necessary, the notification said.
