Apple has been on a tear this week. The company has announced both an update to the Mac Mini desktop computer. However, they were buried in the Memorial, the news that they can wear the brand new M4 Pro chip. That’s right. As expected, the M4 Pro has entered the discussion.
The big news? The Apple Silicon M4 Pro chip finally brings Thunderbolt 5 support to Macs. Thunderbolt 5, with a base speed of 80 Gbps and support for 120 Gbps. The cables also offer support for two 6K screens. This is beneficial for Mac Mini users in video editing and related fields.
Apart from that, the M4 Pro chips bring a lot of improvements. Apple says this is currently “the world’s fastest CPU core, delivering the best single-core performance.” The company also boasts “fast multi-threaded performance.”
There are faster cores and a faster ray tracing engine compared to the previous generation. The M4 Pro features a 14-core CPU, with ten cores and four cores working efficiently. It has a 16-core neural engine, which the company claims is three times faster than the old M1. The chip includes a 20-core GPU, with powerful caching.
The M4 Pro chip also supports up to 64GB of memory, with a memory bandwidth of 273GB/s. Apple says this metric doubles the bandwidth of other PC AI chips, enabling “accelerated AI workloads.”
To that end, Apple says the chip will “deliver the blazing performance of Apple Intelligence.” It remains to be seen when the M4 Pro will also appear in other products, such as laptops. The M3 Pro debuted in , so there’s a strong chance it could happen this year.
