Breakup messages are always painful to receive. Even when the sender tries their best to be gentle and considerate of your feelings.
Of course, not everyone is so adept at conveying difficult issues with a damage reduction package. Breakups can be messy, hurtful, and honest. Then there is the small matter of practical things: dividing our lives, our homes, our belongings, our memories. That’s not even considered when children, pets, and shared friendship groups are included.
How to separate romantic rejection from your self-esteem
A new AI tool is coming, which neatly summarizes breakup texts, giving you the important points without having to sift through every word sent by your heartthrob.
One user of the beta version of iOS 18.1 experienced firsthand the impact of the new Apple Intelligence features. They posted a screenshot of a summary of the breakup text (viewed by Mashable), but have since deleted their post and asked that the wording be redacted so both parties can process their split in private.
When the user received a breakup text, Apple Intelligence went ahead and served them an AI-generated shortened version of the message. It read: “I’m not in love anymore; you want household items.” Straight to the point.

The user then posted a screenshot of the breakdown text on X (formerly Twitter), followed by a tweet confirming its authenticity. After the publication of this article, which contained the original post, the user decided to delete the entire post and said, “I decided to value privacy more than publicity and delete the original tweet.”
As Mashable’s senior editor Stan Schroeder points out, Apple Intelligence is still not available to all users, only in the public beta of iOS. And Apple’s iPhone 16 – which Apple says is “the first iPhone designed for Apple Intelligence” – launch without Apple Intelligence. To get Apple Intelligence, you must sign up for beta.apple.com — more information on how to sign up in this guide.
Is this the future of separation? Or, this is just another attempt to “fine-tune” our emotions and our love lives – something that doesn’t sound completely or realistic. According to evolutionary psychology, humans are hard-wired to process rejection as a threat to survival. The AI shortcut may soften the blow in the short term, but in the end, you’ll probably still feel bad about being dumped. You can’t AI your way out of emotional processing! You have to feel the emotions and move on. Look at yourselves!
And remember: you are not rejected, the relationship is.
