The composer AR Rahman he said he is happy with the kind of work he is doing in the Hindi film industry today, years after he first came out publicly as “the gang” was spreading false news against him, which, he said, led to a decline in Bollywood specials. The composer said that the work he is doing today is satisfying to him, from seeing himself with nothing left a few years ago.
During an interview with Connect Cine, Rahman was asked about that phase in his life, and whether he is in a better mood today. The composer said he is in a happier place now, as he continues work on quality projects and his longtime collaborators Mani Ratnam and Imtiaz Ali. He worked with them in the recent films Ponniyin Selvan and Amar Singh Chamkila.
“At that time I felt that way because I heard a few stories, that someone called my name and other people said, ‘No, no, I’m going to finance this film and I’m going to get you five and six people. do these things’. I’m very happy to work with the people I’m working with now. The freedom I have now, is to do good films like Imtiaz Ali and Mani Ratnam’s films. That is very satisfying with other big movies in Bollywood. My plates are full and these are very challenging films, something I am proud to be a part of,” he added.
In an earlier interview with Radio Mirchi, Rahman revealed how he doesn’t turn down good offers but they don’t come to him as there is a “gang, who because of disagreements, spread false rumours.” The composer said that when casting director Mukesh Chhabra approached him to compose Dil Bechara, he gave him four songs in two days.
“Mukesh told me, ‘Sir, how many people said don’t go, don’t go to him (AR Rahman) and told me stories after stories.’ I heard that, and I realized, ‘Yes, okay, now I understand why I am doing less (working in Hindi films) and why good movies are not coming to me’. I make dark films, because there is a gang fighting against me, without knowing that it is hurting.”
