Actor-turned-politician and Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) leader Vijay has accused the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu of misleading people about the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Vijay alleges that DMK came to power by making false promises and continues to mislead the public, the NEET cancellation issue being a prime example.
“How long will he deceive?” The words of the song, ‘In this country, in our country, in our country…,’ are very suitable for the present rulers of Tamil Nadu. The idea of the rulers of Tamil Nadu is to deceive the people by making false promises during the election and to deceive the people again after winning the election. There are various proofs of this. The most important of them is related to the NEET exam issue,” Vijay said in a post to X targeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin.
He further said, “During the 2021 election campaign, the current governors assured the people of Tamil Nadu by campaigning that if we come to power, we will definitely cancel the NEET exam, that we know the secret of canceling the NEET exam. But now the power to cancel the NEET exam rests with the Union government. Is it not an act of deceiving the people who voted for it by saying that the country’s government cannot remove it? The rulers of Tamil Nadu, who dream of deceiving the people of Tamil Nadu by lying, will not be able to fulfill their dreams in future.”
Responding to Vijay’s allegations, Tamil Nadu State Education Minister Anbil Mahesh revealed that the state government had moved a separate resolution in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly against NEET.
“He may express his opinion, but he also knows that we passed a different resolution in Tamil Nadu and the struggle to get it through the Governor’s office, which happened only after the intervention of the court. Our Chief Minister is really protesting. When our legal protest happened in one side, we thought that INDIA party will win and Congress will rule, as Rahul Gandhi himself said that after coming to power, there will be no NEET. But the change in governance did not happen, and their hearts have not changed either. Apart from politics, we believe that we will win through the legal battle,” said Minister Anbil Mahesh.
The NEET issue remains a controversial topic in Tamil Nadu, with political parties and leaders continuing to talk about promises made and steps taken to address it.
The ban on NEET was one of the points in the DMK’s manifesto in March 2024 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
