The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Thursday alleged that stones were pelted by a group of students watching the film Sabarmati Report during a public screening at New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University. The film is based on the 2002 Godhra train arson incident that led to riots in Gujarat, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister.
The ABVP revealed that stones were thrown at the event they had planned, and it was seen that the angry students were looking for the stone throwers, which led to chaos.
The university administration quickly intervened to defuse the situation, allowing the examination to continue. No one has been identified as the person who threw the stones.
The ABVP, an RSS-affiliated student body, however, accused leftist groups of trying to disrupt the screening.
“We have been peacefully screening the Sabarmati Report, which was also seen by the Prime Minister and released tax-free in many states. We have seen several films like this in the past. The left wing is protesting and trying to block the screening,” said Rajeshwar Kant Dubey, President of ABVP JNU.
“However, when more than 1,000 students gathered here to watch the film, they withdrew. They then used their second option and threw stones in the dark,” he added.
Shikha Swaraj, Secretary of JNU ABVP, said stones were pelted on the balcony of the hostel about 10-15 minutes after the search began, adding that no one was found during the search.
The student leaders said that they will file a complaint with the Delhi Police and demanded that the JNU administration take strict action against those who committed the incident.
