An anti-corruption team on Sunday was attacked by a team of clerks in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki after the government officials were caught accepting bribes, police said. The police were attacked while guarding tax clerks who were taking bribes.
The issue became more intense when the anti-corruption police recently arrested two tax clerks and an assistant clerk due to a farmer’s complaint. Officials also arrested other tax clerks on bribery charges.
The anti-corruption police have received another complaint from some clerks who take bribes. On December 17, while the police were keeping a close eye on them, a group of clerks attacked the anti-corruption team and destroyed their car, the police said.
Pictures from the area showed the police arriving at the scene and pulling back a man with a bloodied face. When he was beaten by the farmer, the complainant was also injured and the police took him away from the area.
After the incident, the clerks who collected their money met at the police station and alleged misconduct by the anti-corruption team. While the farmer and Virendra of the anti-corruption team filed a complaint against the tax clerk, the revenue clerk filed a complaint against the anti-corruption team over the incident.
“On December 17, the anti-corruption team in Ayodhya caught the revenue clerks for bribery and registered a case. Eight to ten of them misbehaved with the anti-corruption officials. They beat up the anti-corruption officials while they were taking them. A female revenue clerk who also filed a complaint against the anti-corruption police,” said the ASP. of Barabanki Akhilesh Narayan Singh.
“We are analyzing the CCTV footage. We are still investigating the matter,” he added.
