Extending their support to farmers’ demands, a delegation of the ruling AAP party in Punjab on Wednesday met farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal at the Khanauri protest site and urged him to seek medical treatment saying his life was “important”.
Dallewal’s death soon entered its 31st day on Wednesday.
The delegation includes Punjab Minister and AAP state unit president Aman Arora, ministers Gurmeet Singh Khudian, Balbir Singh, Barinder Kumar Goyal, Hardeep Singh Mundian, Tarunpreet Singh Sond, Laljit Singh Bhullar and and working president of the party unit Amansher Singh Sherry Kalsi, among others. .
Dallewal, 70, has been sitting on the Khanauri border since November 26 to put pressure on the Center to accept farmers’ demands, including a formal guarantee of the minimum support price (MSP).
The farmers’ leader has not had anything during his fast and has only recently collected water, said the doctors of the private organization who have been treating him in the past.
They also described his condition as critical.
The doctors checked him regularly. However, Dallewal refused to take any kind of treatment despite his deteriorating health.
Speaking to reporters after meeting Dallewal, Aman Arora said that due to the “wrong policies” of the Centre, farmers have to stage a year-long agitation on the borders of Delhi against the farm laws which have now been repealed and now ten months ago farmers are again agitating in Shambhu. and the borders of Khanauri for their demands.
He said the Center has failed to fulfill the promises it made to farmers when the farm laws were repealed.
“It has been a month of fasting for Dallewal. His agitation is for genuine needs and he is fighting for Punjab but we know the Centre’s attitude of indifference,” Arora said.
“We told Dallewal sahab that the AAP government and our party and the whole of Punjab are with them in their grief. But we told him that for the agitation to succeed and achieve its goal, the person who leads it is important for his life,” said Arora. .
Arora said that from time to time AAP MPs and allies have been raising the issue of farmers in parliament, but the Center is not willing to listen.
He also said that recently the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation raised the issue of Dallewal’s life with Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and urged him to intervene and pressure the Center to start talks with the protesting farmers.
“Today, we have asked Dallewal ji that if he stops his hunger strike that will be good,” Arora said, adding that if the farmer leader wants to continue his strike “at least he should not refuse treatment as his internal organs are also affected”.
“We still hope that Dallewal will accept our request,” he said.
However, farmers’ leader Abhimanyu Kohar later said that until the formal confirmation of the MSP demand is accepted Dallewal’s fast will continue as before.
“Dallewal ji made this clear on stage yesterday,” said Kohar.
Dallewal on Wednesday told Aman Arora that crop diversification will not happen until the center gives a formal guarantee to the MSP.
Arora said that given the Centre’s “negligence and shamelessness”, “we all know that this scandal will continue for a long time and Dallewal sahab’s life is important”.
Answering a question, he said if Dallewal tells AAP or the party government in the state that something should be done so that they can fight firmly for their real demands, we are ready to do it.
To another question, Arora said, “If the farmers want, we can call an all-party meeting. But they all know what the BJP’s stand will be as far as farmers’ demands are concerned with the Center. What we are saying is that such a strategy should be there that will bring results. .”
When asked if Dallewal said that he should not be evicted from his protest site, Aman Arora said that the government has no intention of doing so and called him a baseless person spreading such rumours.
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh said they are worried about Dallewal’s health.
He said that our medical team has already been assigned to the protest site.
“We are worried about his health, we are telling him to at least get medical help. If they agree, we can start the treatment at the place itself,” said Balbir Singh.
Earlier in the day, Congress MP from Amritsar, Gurjeet Singh Aujla also met Dallewal in Khanauri.
Aujla said she went to inquire about his health.
Expressing concern over his prolonged fast, Aujla told reporters that he requested Dallewal that people need to be led by him and people need leaders like him and his life is important.
He said Dallewal told him that political leaders should put pressure on the central government regarding the farmers’ demands.
The farmers, under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been camping in Shambhu and the Khanauri border between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by the army.
A “jatha (group)” of 101 farmers attempted to march to Delhi on foot three times between December 6 and 14 but were stopped by security forces in Haryana.
